Unir: Plants have got different parts. The main parts of a plant are the leaves, roots and stems. Not all plants have got flowers. Roots take water and minerals from the ground. Leaves make food for the plant from sunligth. This is the process of photosynthesis. The bright colours and smell of flowers atrract insects. Insect are important for pollination. The stem carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.

Unir: Some plants, such as roses, have got thorns on their stems for protection. Sometimes, flowers become fruit, like on this tomato plant. The stem of a tree is called a trunk.

Unir: Did you know that lentils are seeds?. A seed is how flowering plants reproduce. They contain a miniature plant protected by a seed coat. A nut is a dry fruit with one seed that is protected by a hard shell.

Unir: Put some water on the paper towel and put it in the jar. Put four or five lentils on the paper towel. Close the jar and put it in a sunny place. Copy this chart with the days on the horizontal line and the centimeters on the vertical line. When you measure your plant, draw a picture. Put some soil in the pot. When your lentils have roots, put then in the soil. Care for your plant. Bring it to class and show your classmates. Compare your plant with your class mates. Wich one is taller?.

Unir: Plants make their own food/minerals in a process called reproduction/photosyntesis. Insects take pollen/water from one flower to another. This helps plants reproduce/grow.

Unir: Leaves get carbon dioxide from the air. Water and minerals travel from the roots to the leaves. Plants make food with the sunlight, water and minerals. They release oxygen into the air.

Unir: Some plants have got flowers that help the plant reproduce. The stamen is the male part of the flower. It has got pollen at the top. Flowers have got petals. Petals have got bright colours to attract insects. The pistil is the female part of the flower. It has got ovules inside.

Unir: Sexual reproduction: insects, like bees, carry pollen from one flower to another. The pollen travels down the pistil to the ovules and a seed forms. Asexual reproduction: some plants do not use pollen to reproduce. For example, when we leave a potato in the ground, a new potato plant will grow.

Unir: The leaf moves. We can see oxygen bubbles. The leaf gets bigger. The leaf changes colour.

Unir: Put the water in the bowl. Put the leaves in the water. Push the down with the paperclips. Observe the leaves. What can you see?.

Plants that live in the desert have got fat stems. The stems hold lots of water. Plants turn towards the Sun for more light. Some plants close their leaves. Other plants have got spines. This protects them from predators. Some plants, such as the lotus, live in water.
