Our AV system is not working today, so we can’t show you the 2-million-dollar safety video that our ad agency did for us. But since very little of what that video tells you actually saves your lives, I am going to do it instead. The FAA says that 60 per cent of you ignore the safety talk. Today you’ll hear the real safety talk you should have been given years ago. You don’t want to miss this one. What does the FAA say about the safety video?. Most of the passengers don’t pay attention to it. Most of the passengers take good notes of it. Almost everybody watches it carefully. Half the passengers pay attention to it. The safest seats of this plane are the ones facing backward, like the ones the flight crew are seated in. No... that’s not a coincidence. The next safest seats are over the wings, closest to the emergency exit. If you are not in one of those right now... that’s a bummer. Which of the following are the safest seats?. The ones at the back. The ones at the front. The ones next to the emergency exits. The ones that are not facing backward. Here’s what you can do to help ensure your survival. Look where the nearest exit is. Now count the rows between you and that exit. If the cabin was full of smoke or upside down, or full of smoke and upside down, how would you get to the exit? Take a moment to visualize yourself doing just that. What is the pilot’s advice to locate the exits in an emergency?. To gain situational awareness before the emergency. To count how many rows of seats there are in the plane. To look backwards. Pay attention to the safety briefing. Now look at your seatbelt. I know you all know how to use it. It’s common for people in emergency stress situations to try to open that thing by pressing a button that’s not actually there, like the seatbelt on your car. So, take a moment to imagine yourself lifting the flap in an emergency. What is the frequent problem with the seatbelt in emergencies?. It is very difficult to open. People forget about how to open it. People cannot reach the release button. The release button gets stuck. Now you are probably well aware that there’s a life jacket under your seat. Forget about it. They are less likely to save your life than those little airline pillows. Sure, there was the famous 2009 emergency water landing on the Hudson. But there were boats on hand immediately and no one actually needed the life vests. There was a flight that ditched in the Caribbean in 1970, where 40 lives were likely saved by the vests. Life vests…. were very useful after the Hudson water landing. are said to be almost useless. are very useful if a plane lands in the Caribbean. saved people’s life in the Hudson 2009 incident. There was an emergency water landing off the coast of Ethiopia in 1996 in which many passengers put life jackets on too early and then couldn’t get out of the flooded fuselage. To put it another way, if we replaced those life vests with a box of chocolates, it wouldn’t alter your survival odds. What is mentioned to be a problem when using life vest?. Passengers think it is too early to wear vests. They prevent people to get the chocolates box. People use them as pillows. Wearing them before leaving the wreck. Let’s take a second to talk about those oxygen masks. Here’s the thing. If we lose cabin pressure at fairly low altitude... no big deal. You can breathe just fine. If we lose cabin pressure at cruising altitude, you can’t. What will happen if a plane loses cabin pressure at low altitude?. O2 masks will be deployed. The pilot will have to descend immediately. Passengers are in a serious situation. Nothing really important. If we lose cabin pressure at cruising altitude, here’s what I’m required to do: I’m going to push the nose of the plane into an emergency descend, but it’s not dangerous, I’ve practiced. Also, by law, I need to notify ATC as well as the Airline. And I need to do all that before I can get on the microphone and tell you what the hell is going on. So, don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me for a bit. Right after a loss of pressure at cruising altitude, .... flying crew will notify cabin crew. passengers will be informed immediately. cabin crew will rush around. it will not be said on the PA system immediately. For those of you who didn’t manage to get your masks on in time in case of a loss of pressure at cruising altitude, you’ll probably pass out and then wake up in a minute or two when I get the plane to a lower altitude. What can happen to passengers who don’t put their O2 mask in a loss of pressure at cruising altitude?. They can die within a minute or two. They will be fined. They may faint but recover in a while. They may get a deep sleep and never wake up again. I am the human factors research division manager. What the division is responsible for is performing research that’s aimed at enhancing human performance within the aviation spectrum. I am an aviation safety inspector. We would develop a test that will take place in the simulator here and we’ll be able to collect data enhancing efficiency reducing the carbon footprint and reducing noise, putting more airplanes together into the same air space more efficiently. What is the mentioned project aiming for?. Enhancing data collection about humans. Reducing emissions. Putting all together. Aircraft performance. I’m the team coordinator for the cabin safety research team. We are concerned with everything inside the cabin that relates to passenger safety. We’re currently in the Flexible aircraft cabin simulator, also known as the FlexSim; it is what we use for evacuation research. The “FlexSim” is a Flexible aircraft cabin simulator... which is integrating ABS as a new technology. which is said to be used for researching purposes. which helps to cut the edges of the evacuation system. which avoids concerns from National Airspace System. I came from NASA. Each engineer, we’re all part of the big team effort and the project effort to get that component or engine or aircraft certified. The first thing when somebody has a new idea, flying cars, electric engines... the first place that we will often come is to the aircraft certification. The innovation is incredible, to listen to ways people have thought of bringing new safety into the aviation industry. What does the speaker find amazing?. The big team effort to get an aircraft certified. Working for NASA. Getting to know the new safety proposals. Being an aerospace engineer. What I do everyday is manage the diversity and inclusion programme for AVS. A big role is making sure that we get the best talent across this country to come and work in FAA and AVS. What is the most challenging goal in her job?. To participate in America’s Got Talent. To hire the most qualified and capable personnel. To make diversity an issue. To get promoted to and work in FAA. I’m an Air Traffic Control Safety Specialist. We are responsible for setting and approving safety standards. We monitor compliance against those standards and we also oversee the Air Traffic Organization’s safety management system. As an Air Traffic Control Safety Specialist, she must ... Check monitors and other appliances. Approve the mandatory test. Do the standard job overseas. Supervise the ATO safety management system. I love the fact that what we do, there are tangible results every single day. When there’s not a commercial aviation accident, we know that’s the results of the regulations that we had in place. From her speech, we can infer that ... There are more commercial aviation accidents than desired. She is proud of the work she is doing. She is in the right place. As a matter of fact, the results are not tangible. How much did the safety briefing video that the company usually shows cost?. 0.2 million dollars. 2 million dollars. 22 million dollars. 12 million dollars. According to the Captain´s comments, the video …. is highly interesting. should be avoided. is a symbol of the Company. is not that useful. What does the FAA say about the safety video?. Most of the passengers don’t pay attention to it. Most of the passengers take good notes of it. Almost everybody watches it carefully. Half the passengers pay attention to it. People cannot reach the release button. The release button gets stuck. In an evacuation, …. only bring your laptop with you. don’t forget to get your bag. luggage can cause many problems. pilots will leave the plane through the windows. Life vests …. were very useful after the Hudson water landing. are said to be almost useless. are very useful if a plane lands in the Caribbean. saved people’s life in the Hudson 2009 incident.
