An atom is the smallest particle that makes up any substance. The main part of an atom is made up of a nucleus. Protons and neutrons are contained within the nucleus. The electrons that orbit the nucleus complete the atom. An electrically balanced atom has an equal number of protons and electrons. An electrically charged atom is called an ion. An ion can have a positive charge or a negative charge. Materials that are conductors can allow the flow of electrically charged atoms and create drift. This is the movement that creates an electric current. The current will not flow through materials that are insulators. What is the smallest particle of any substance?. A proton. A neutron. An atom. Part 1: Configuration Two or more circuit components are usually connected in three basic ways: series, parallel and series-parallel. All three examples are closed circuits. Current will not flow through an open circuit. A series circuit is a circuit with only one path for the current to flow. Electricity flow continuous in one direction. A parallel circuit has more than one path for the current to flow. if one leg of the path is broken, the current will continue through the others. In a series-parallel circuit, current flows through both series and parallel configurations. This more complex configuration is common where there are several connected nodes. An abnormal connection can lead to a short circuit. This happens when current travels along the wrong path, causing overcurrent. This creates a hazardous situation that can lead to damaged equipment, overheating and even fires. Many electrical systems include branch circuits. These run between outlets, fixtures or motors and protective fuse boxes. What are the three basic types of circuit connections?. Open, closed, and short. Simple, complex, and advanced. How are the terms hammer drill and rotary hammer sometimes used?. To describe different brands. To mean the same tool. To refer to saws. To describe small tools.

Fasteners and tools use imperial measurements or metric, and knowing the difference is important. It prevents you from rouding off a fastener, damaging tools, or causing injury. If you don`t know an item´s size, use a micrometer or other caliper to measure it. Check centimeters or millimeters for metric tools. Look at inches for imperial tools. You will also need to know larger measurements, such as feet, yards, and meters. These measurements are often used in building plans. Temperature measurements are also imprtant to know. Some contries measure degrees using the Fahrenheit scale and others use te Celsius scale. You may to convert from one scale to the other. What can happen if you use the wrong size tool?. You might damage the fastener or hurt yourself. The tool will last longer. The measurement will be more accurate. It will tighten better.

What instrument can you use to measure small items?. Thermometer. Ruler. Caliper or micrometer. Tape measure.

What system uses centimeters and millimeters?. Imperial system. Metric system. Fahrenheit system. English system.

What are feet and yards used for?. Measuring temperature. Measuring distance in building plans. Measuring weight. Measuring pressure.

Before you begin, determine your goal. If you want to measure current, an ammeter is needed. Remember, an ammeter must connect in a series with the circuit. To measure voltage, use a voltmeter. The voltmeter is set up differently. It connects in parallel with the part of the circuit to be measured. The third option is to measure resistnace with an ohmmeter. Most circuits can be measured with a multimeter. This can be used to measure voltage, current or resistance, it is also known as a universal instrument, in Unit 2 we will discuss how to connect each instrument to the correct terminal. Electrical shock is caused by current flowing through the human body. This can result in serious or fatal injuries. Protect yourself from electrical circuits by using insulating materials. Materials that resist electrical currents are called insulating materials. these materials are used to separate electrical conductors, not allowing current to pass between them. Insulating materials are used as protective coatings on electrical wires and cables. Materials such as PVC, rubber, rigid laminate, paper, and dry wood very good insulators. Bushings are used where exposed bare high-voltage cables are supported by electrical poles. These bushings are made from porcelain, glass, or composite polymer materials made from resin. Insulation is also necessary in power systems, such as small transformers, generators and electronics. Wire coils are insulated with polymer varnish or fiberglass tape. Vinyl Tape is also used to coat electrical wires. Finally, synthetic rubbers, like neoprene, are good insulators. These materials are versatile and resistan to oil, weather, and heat. What causes electrical shock?. Voltage stored in batteries. Current flowing through the human body. Touching plastic surfaces. Lack of insulation.

A conductor is a material with a moveable electric charge. The electrons in atoms of conductors have more freedom to move than in atoms of insulators. These free electrons can float in space between adjacent atoms. This relative mobility is called electric conductivity. It is determined by the atoms that make up a substance. The most familiar conductors are metals, such as copper and aluminium. Silver is the best conductor, but it is very costly. Here are some additional examples of metallic conductors: gold, iron, brass-mercury, steel, bronze Some non-metallic materials are electrical conductors as well. These include: graphite, salt solutions and all types of plasma. An additional option is conductive concrete, formed from coalesced particles. The amount of conductivity that a material possesses varies dependign upon temperature and other factors. When chosing a conductor, consider where and how it will be used. Cost and availability are also important factors. What is a conductor?. A material that blocks electric charge. A material with a moveable electric charge. A material that has no electrons. A material that produces electricity.
