Humourist, the crudities and miseries of the world are sterilised by humour. One of Dicken's historical novel. A story of the French Revolution. The story of a poor boy's cruel treatment and miserable adventures. The story of a bad character who improves his behaviour after a ghost tells him the manner of his death. The story is set in industrial surroundings where Mr Gradgrind's children are brought up among hard facts and without any help for the spirit. The son robs a bank, and the girl makes an unhappy marriage. This novel is based on Dicken's own life, which had a sad beginning. IT is one of the most pupular of his novels, but it cannot be called cheerful. Nicholas Nickleby is the tale of a boy who is left poor on his father's death. In these two novels we find a more consistent outlook on characters, a progress in psychological realism. Everything is subordinated to the main theme. This novel describes the adventures of two girls of different sorts: Rebecca (Becky) Sharp, a clever, brave and poor girl without conscience and Amelia Sedley, the gentle daughter of a rich Londoner. This novel is based on the life love and marriage of Clive Newcome, the son of an honourable officer who loses all his money. Part of this novel deals with the American War of Independence. This novel describes the life of a poor and unbeautiful girl who is brought up by a cruel aunt and sent to a miserable school. This novel is concerned with the wool industry, with riots, and with the Napoleonic wars. The passionate orphan Heathcliff falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw, but he hears her say that she could never marry such a low sort of creature. A delicate picture of a live in a village. The life of the village, where the ladies of good family are poor. This novel show deep feeling for the poor people employed at this time in factories. This is the sad story of a girl whose parents are dead. This is a study of the different lives led by English people, especially the poor in the north and the happier ones in the south. This is a Detective and complicated story about Walter Hartright, a drawing-teacher, who teaches a rich girl, Laura Fairlie. The woman is Anne Catherick. Wilkey Collins produced these two novels with Dickens. This is the first of those novels that are known as the Barsetshire novels. Barsetshire is the name given to the (imaginary) county where the scenes are set. This is the first George Elliot's Novel. George Eliot's two best novels. This novel is set in a provincial town where Dorothea Brooke, a girl of noble qualities, marries old Mr Casaubon. Virginia Woolf described this novel as "one of the few English novels written for adult people". This novel describes a boy's troubles when he is educated at home instead of going to school. Richard (who is of good family) falls in love with Lucy, a farmer's niece and secretly marries her. This is a tale of a poor girl whose misfortunes are so great that in the end she murders a man and is hanged. Her poor father's life is upset when he learns that he is descended from an ancient family. Michael Henchard, while he is drunk, sells his wife and children for a few pounds. Later, realising what he has done, he decides not to touch strong drink again for twenty years. He works hard, becomes rich, and is made Mayor of Casterbridge. After eighteen years his wife returns, but that is not the end of their troubles. Henchard is ruined, and starts drinking again. He dies miserably. Thomas Hardy. The story of patient love on one side, and selfish passion on the other. Gabriel Oak, a sheperd, loves Bathsheba Everdene with a true heart and serves her faithfully for many years; but Sergeant Try, an attractive but cruel soldier, marries her and treats her badly. He is murdered by an angry farmer and after many troubles Bathsheba marries Oak. Sir Willoughby Patterne is a good picture of a man very pleased with himself. And Clara Middleton is Meredith's most attractive heroine. |
